Do you know how goal-setting can make you successful? As a busy mum, you’re probably wondering how to make your dreams come true, outside of home life that is!

I used to dream and wonder how on earth I would make my dreams happen. Little did I know that in order to transform my life, goal-setting is key!

Another thing I used to do was use my children as the reason why I couldn’t ascend to new heights. Sound familiar?

What I didn’t know was that

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible –

Tony Robbins

I wanted to stop worrying about money and feeling overwhelmed every day I saw those brown envelopes come through the post.

It was evident to me that I had to transform my life, but I didn’t know how to.

I started listening to podcasts and following some influential people online and learnt that I needed to plan for my future. You may have heard that

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Then I learned an important Law of the Universe, which is that you will attract whatever you focus on and feel strongly about.

So I got cracking with writing down my goals, and it seemed as if no sooner had I written them down than the wheels of transformation set to motion in my life.

Without further ado, continue reading to see how goal-setting can make you successful.

What are goals?

A goal is the object of a person’s ambition. The desired result. There is no consensus on what ideal goals are because goals are personal to every individual.

Goals are usually life-long missions. Short-term goals are usually described as objectives, but they are essential in propelling you to achieving your main goals.

Recently, I wrote down my 10-year life plan. This is something that should be revisited and adjusted from time to time. I will be revisited my goals yearly, making adjustments where necessary.

Why should we set goals?

Setting Goals Can Guide Us

Goals help set the direction of where we would like to go in life. This is because by knowing what our main goals are, we can begin to take steps to accomplish our dreams.

No one knows exactly what will happen tomorrow, let alone in a year, and certainly not ten years, but at least by setting goals, you will be making positive changes, and progressing towards your goals.

Goals Help Us To Evaluate

How will you know if you’ve made progress if you don’t have something to look back on to analyse?

Setting goals help you to evaluate whether you achieved what you set out to do in the first place. It’s okay if you haven’t, as long as you tweak it if required, and continue striving towards your goal.

Goal-Setting Makes Us Happy

The first thing I said to myself when I realised I wanted change was “I just want to be happy”. I was tired of living a mediocre life and living from hand to mouth.

When I set my goals, I had something greater than myself to work towards.

Setting goals and making efforts to achieve them give us a sense of well-being and happiness. Importantly, happiness can be derived even when specific goals are not reached. It’s the taking part that counts, and tweaking goals when necessary.

Goals Help Us Gain New Knowledge

In the process of reaching your goals, you may need to acquire new knowledge and skills.

After I specified what my life goal was, I realised that I needed to enrol on a variety of courses to gain new knowledge.

Having goals without possessing the knowledge required to achieve those goals can make achieving the goal seem impossible.

Alternatively, gaining the knowledge required will take you steps closer to achieving your goals.

Setting Goals Make Us Successful

Working without having set goals and just reminds me of a hamster on a Ferris wheel.

Sure, you’re working, but what are you working towards? What is the desired result?

Goals give you clarity on what you desire to achieve instead of you living life haphazardly.

The fact that you envision the outcome you want in life, and start working towards them, is a success.

Breathe

To set the right goals, you need to slow down and gather your thoughts about what exactly you would like to achieve.

You can’t be sure you are fully aligned with your destiny if you are in a hurry to decide what exactly it is you would like to achieve.

What’s more, frantically choosing your goals may lead to you making the wrong choices.

However, by slowing down, you will be able to consider your options and be more certain about which choices to make.

Know What You Want

“What would you do if you had a lot more time, and money was no barrier?” my mentor asked a group of us one day.

That was not the first time someone had asked me this question. A few years ago I was asked the same question, and I dreamt big.

However, no sooner had I decided what I wanted to achieve than I allowed my surroundings to dictate to me that my dreams were not achievable.

I didn’t slow down, breathe, and think it through.

This time around was different. I gave my imagination permission to be vivid. The truth is, there should be no limiting beliefs about what you can achieve.

If you believe it, you can achieve it.

Motherhood is not a barrier to success!

Taking the time to decide what you would do if time and money were not a barrier would help you begin to live in alignment with your purpose.

When you set the right goals according to your passion and purpose, you will begin to live a more joyful and fulfilled life.

Know Your ‘Why’

Knowing why you want your outcomes will drive you to keep on going even when you feel like giving up.

If you dream big, as you should, chances are that you may face some challenges along the way.

Knowing your ‘why’, what motivates you, will ensure that you keep on pushing towards your goals despite those inevitable challenges.

Without having a source of motivation, you may give up at the slightest appearance of failure – which is not failure, but a chance for you to evaluate and tweak your objectives.

How Will You Achieve Your Goals?

Focus On One Thing At a Time

You’ve probably heard that women are better at multitasking than men are.

I don’t mean to burst your bubble, but the ability to multitask is a myth!

The truth is, the brain is unable to fully concentrate on and achieve high outcomes on numerous tasks at the same time.

What happens is that we either shift focus from one thing to another in quick succession or do a series of tasks haphazardly.

To master our tasks while on our journey to achieving our goals, it would be best to focus on one thing before moving to another.

The amazing thing is that focusing on one thing will eventually open up a world of new opportunities for you.

Set time; Set Place

Gone are the days of hoping to build your empire whilst laying in bed with your laptop.

I tried that. It didn’t work!

To see how goal-setting can make you successful, you need to have a set time and place in which to do your work.

This does work!

I find that I am more productive when I assign myself a set time and place to work. It does something to my mind to get me working!

People tend to be more effective at achieving their goals when they have a routine time and place for working.

Your brain will associate that chosen time and place with work, and not leisure, leading to more productivity and success.

Set Parameters

To be successful at achieving your goals, set parameters of how much of an activity you will achieve in one sitting.

For example, you may have a goal to write a book. You may then decide you will write at least 500 words each day, but no more than 1000 words each day.

Whatever your upper parameter, make sure it’s sustainable.

Setting both the lower and upper parameter will ensure that a) you get closer to your goals each day, and b) you prevent the burnout that could occur if you keep on going without stopping.

Evaluate Your Actions

To be sure your goals are being met as planned, you will need to evaluate your actions.

By measuring your progress based on your written goals, you can see what’s working and can be continued, or revise your goals to get back on track.

As stated above, you won’t be able to achieve your dreams without setting goals and having a written plan.

Just as important if not more, is the fact that you won’t know if your goal for success is being achieved without evaluating them.

Outsource For Success

Many hands make light work

This may sound all technical and all, and many instances it can be, but outsourcing doesn’t have to be.

Have you ever relied on your mum or a babysitter to look after your children to give you some time to do something else? Or have you hired a cleaner to help you around the house? This is outsourcing.

Outsourcing various tasks to others who can do the job quicker and probably better than you can help you reach your goals more successfully.

Having other people handle certain aspects of your business will allow you to be more efficient. This is because you will have more time to focus on the core aspects of your business or goal.

Outsourcing will save a lot of time-wasting, which will lead to your success.

Conclusion

There you have it! How goal-setting can make you successful.

Goals can give you structure and can act as a beacon in your life. Knowing your life-goals can help navigate you in the directions you should go in your life.

A happy mind is a happy life in my experience, and it is kept happier when there is some structure to it.

In time, your happiness will hopefully radiate to others around you.

Goal-setting, when done correctly, can transform your life and make you successful.

What dreams do you have for your future? Write them down this week and start goal-setting.

Your dreams may just become a reality!

  1. Hi Ngozi,

Setting goals is very important for success for sure. I like so many of the points you highlighted in your post, but just to mention one of them: knowing your ‘why’. This is so very, very important and something that my mentor drummed into me from day one! If you are not ultra clear on your ‘why’, you’re going to struggle.

Your ‘why’ ‘has to be a deep-seated, burning motivator that drives you from the pit of your stomach. You need that kind of motivation when times get tough. If your ‘why’ is more shallow or vague (e.g. “I want to make money”) then this won’t push you through.

That was just one point that stood out to me, but they’re all great, thanks for sharing them! 🙂

    1. Hi Ash,
You are right. In my case, that’s where “what is your purpose?” comes into it. I answer my ‘why’ under that category. For somebody else their why could be something else, and believe it or not, some people could love money so much and be fascinated by it and that could be their ‘why’. Some people could have been stricken by poverty in the past and that is their driving force for ‘why’ they want success. No matter ‘why’ a person desires success, if they are not committed, they would eventually start giving excuses reasons for why they cannot continue. Thanks for commenting!😊

  2. Such a fantastic post and as you say the idea of money can be overwhelming, which I know from personal experience. 1. “Know your Why” is sooo important! That’s how I came to begin blogging. I had goal of feeling more fulfilled personally. I’m a full time sales coordinator and mommy and somewhere in there kind of lost myself and my sense of who I was before corporate and changing diapers. Lol if the “why” isn’t big enough, sometimes it’s hard to stick to. Gotta make sure it’s enough to light a fire 🔥 great read! Looking forward to more!
