PIN 4 reasons you should take action to achieve your goals

If you are a perfectionist or a recovering perfectionist, you might want to stick around and read this blog post, because we are going to be discussing why you should take action to achieve your goals. Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction, every time!

There is nothing wrong with having some sort of excellence or setting high standards for yourself.

However, the difference between seeking excellence, having a high standard or having a good work ethic is that perfectionism will cause somebody to be so critical of themselves in their quest for perfection that they cause themselves to delay in taking action.

My experience with perfectionism

I consider myself a recovering perfectionist; I wouldn’t say I’m entirely recovered, but I’m on my way to not being a perfectionist.

I was in a coaching session once, and the coach asked what I would like the outcome of the coaching session to be.  I said I would like clarity on all the tasks that I wanted to do for myself. She told me that with action comes clarity.

I wasn’t ready to hear it at the time. I didn’t believe that to get closer to my goals, all I needed to do was take action!

In order for you need to get clarity, you need to step out and take action. You need to take the first step towards your goals.

You have enough today to get you to where you need to get to today. Tomorrow is another day.

There’s no need to worry about tomorrow because what you need for tomorrow will come to you by tomorrow.

Why you should take action to achieve your goals

There’s always room for improvement

There’s a saying:

Leap, and the net will appear

John Burroughs

The notion of this phrase is that if you take a chance, take an action, whatever the consequences may be, you will be caught in a net.

There may not always be a net to catch you. You may fall sometimes and the fall may be bumpy, but there will always be lessons to learn from the experiences. This corresponds with another quote:

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear

There is a Japanese theory, the Kaizen theory. Take action and continuously improve, as there is always room for improvement.

You may be nervous, you may not be as perfect as you would like to be, but don’t let that stop you from doing what you intend to do, because with action comes clarity and with action comes confidence.

Perfection does not exist

Perfection doesn’t exist in human form and human beings are not perfect. Take action, no matter how imperfect it is, and continue to improve.

If you wait until you are perfect and have reached a high standard of perfection, you will not do what you need to do.

If I had waited till I was perfect and had everything I wanted in place before I started my business, I would still be in my comfort zone. If I had waited until I had gotten confident before I sat in front of a camera to record myself, I would never have sat in front of the camera to record any videos.

You are perfect as you are

Your inner critic could tell you lies about yourself. You may criticise yourself and tell yourself that you’re not good enough. You may label yourself as unworthy because you feel you don’t have adequate training or qualifications to do what you need to do.

You may need to train yourself but start now! Do what you can now while you train and improve as you go along. Your message, your product, or your service can bless somebody today.

You are always one or two steps ahead of somebody else, and that other person can learn from you. You don’t have to wait until you reach perfection.

Those who take action achieve success

Those who take action, no matter how imperfect tend to reach success because they understand the concept of improving as they go along, while those who let the fear of failure and perfectionism hinder their vision and progress.

Conclusion

Perfectionism can keep you feeling unworthy, depressed, anxious, and unfulfilled in your life.

You are perfect as you are, you are enough, you have enough in you today to get you where you need to go tomorrow.

Be kind to yourself, have compassion for yourself and take action to achieve your goals, despite your fears. With action comes clarity.
